Tour of the new e-book creation software from Apple.

It certainly has potential but has also raised a lot of questions. The software is free but it will only run on certain (expensive) Apple devices and whilst you can distribute free iBooks for free via a new section of the iTunes Store Apple will take a 30% cut of revenue from any books that are not free and (it would seem) you are not allowed to sell versions of the book outside of the Apple store if selling through the Apple store (so for example you could not sell it via iTunes and Amazon).

Five minute video of Google Maps.

It gives an idea of what Street View does (and does not) show. Interesting too as this video acts a bit like a time machine as it captured the Newton/Arkwright project as it was being redeveloped. This video is useful viewed on its own and I may refer to it in a classroom session as it is sometimes more reliable to show a pre-recorded video clip that to illustrate something like Google Maps as a live demonstration.

Seven minute screencast video. A little rough and ready but makes the point(s).

I think I say at one point that as I click on the links to adverts that Google is paying money to the advertisers. I meant to say (of course) that the advertisers are paying money to Google. Not the most exciting of videos but it does convey some useful points relating to this topic. It is worth noting that Google has just announced that it is closing down Google Labs (which is mentioned in the video) and many observers think this marks the end of a particular phase in Google's development (dominance even) as it seeks to change it's innovation strategy.

This clip is interesting because of what it reveals of some aspects of the porn industry.

It is also very interesting because it acknowledges that there may be copyright issues but it addresses these.

Some of the in-film narration and additional comments may be uncomfortable but that is not to say that they are not of interest. Note too the link to the associated anti-pornography site. The clips are from a show fronted by Tyra Banks who is a well known (mainstream TV) presenter in the US.

Doing a search for suitable clips of sex documentary clips just discovered some clips from a Channel 4 documentary about an infamous bestiality film in the 1980's (carefully edited to be legal of course for TV). Weird though because one of the interviewees is one of my colleagues (an expert in various fields of psychology). I'm sure the narrator is a (now famous) British TV actor.

I like the Virtual Revolution and think it's wonderful that the BBC and Open University (OU) make this kind of series every now and again (like The Future Just Happened a few years ago). In many ways the series is highly complementary to the module but with lots of lovely flashy bits and interviews with the key figures that I can talk about but cannot actually meet.

The website for the series is a great resource and I would encourage you to make full use of it.

By the way there is a book version of The Future Just Happened and copies are in the Boots library.

This is a brilliant documentary from Channel 4 in the UK.

The historical footage is fascinating; freaks, geeks and 60's fashions.

However it provides some great contextual material for the later sections of the programme.

The final section of the programme brings things up-to-date with the impact of the rise of e-commerce.

Based on the clips I've seen (and his previous work) I would recommend this to students.

Great Session on Movies & TV

I'd just like to say what a great session I think we had last Friday looking at the impact of the Internet and digital technology on the movie (aka film - which of course reflected the actual technology being used) and television industries. Small turnout but excellent discussion around the topic. I was very impressed by the level of engagement and enthusiasm shown by everyone present. Nice too where the academic perspective on a topic so clearly links to the real life experiences of students on the module.

Good example of how its like YouTube have helped as well as hindered the movie and television industries. Brilliant way to promote our product providing they can also curb the level of copyright infringing behaviour by the users of the service. The service itself cannot be held responsible as long as they take reasonable steps once alerted to infringement. One has to say they've done a good job of keeping porn off YouTube (by and large - no mean achievement).
